The Warby Ranges is only a short drive from central Wangaratta and covers 14,655 hectares of Australian bushlands. Officially known as the Warby-Ovens National Park this protected area is home to a variety of vegetation and habitats including.

There are a number of locations for family picnics such as Ryan’s Lookout, Briens Gorge Falls, The Forest Camp and Pine Gully. Most have picnic table. There are good opportunities to try your hand at fishing, a spot of camping, walking, bike riding or even prospecting.
The Warby Ranges is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna with Mugga Ironbarks, Spurwinged Wattle and the striking Austral Grass Tree. There is plenty of wildlife but much of it is nocturnal. That being said be on the lookout for Swamp Wallabies and Eastern Grey Kangaroos during the day. As evening falls you may also be lucky to see squirrel gliders, powerful owls and lace monitors.
There is a good selection of walking tracks to suck most levels of fitness but be aware that they all involve steps, uneven surfaces and rocks. Some of the popular tracks include Morgan’s Lookout, Friends Track. Kwat Kwat Lookout, SalisburyWalk, SunriseWalk and Pangarang Lookout Walk. Be sure to take a hat, sunscreen and bottle of water for each person.
The signage from the roadside is often hard to see so you and your map reader will need to be vigilant and lookout for landmarks. Parks Victoria has produced and excellent and informative brochure on the Warby-Ovens National Park which is available online. The Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre also usually has a good supply available.
