Located on Tone Road the Wangaratta Common is now a public grassland reserve that was once used as the Wangaratta aerodrome. It covers a total area of 42.6 hectares and is today is managed by Parks Victoria with the assistance of the Wangaratta Urban Landcare Group.Adjacent to the Common is a comparable parcel of land that is also a conservation reserve. This gives a combined protected area of around 72 hectares.
Today the Wangaratta Common is largely a Grassland and around 96 species of plants have been documented many of which are grass species. The Diuris punctata which is found here is considered at risk in Victoria.
Prior to the area having been cleared for use as an aerodrome it was most likely open box woodland. Today as you wander around there are a number of burnt out tree trunks, the group can be very uneven so be careful.
