Located just south of central Wangaratta are the small communities of Glenrowan, Oxley and Milawa. These three Wangaratta towns provide an excellent day out full of iconic Australian history, wineries and specialty gourmet foods all within a short drive of each other.
Glenrowan is a small town with a huge name in Australian folklore. It was the site of Ned Kelly’s last stand which began on the 26th June 1880 and ended two days later on the 28th June. It was at the Glenrowan siege that the Kelly Gang wore the now famous and iconic suits of armour. During the siege Kelly Gang members Steve Hart, Joe Byrne and Dan Kelly all died as did Martin Cherry and Jack Jones. It recent years the town centre has been well signposted with information boards telling the Ned Kelly story. There is no escaping that Glenrowan is primarily about Ned Kelly given the massive larger that life statue that is found at one end of the town but the immediate area also has some wonderful wineries and places to eat.
Heading from Glenrowan to Milawa you will pass through the small community of Oxley. There is a small public reserve here which is home to a small war memorial, public toilets and children’s play equipment. It is a great place to stop for a rest. It is a hugely popular destination for those travelling to and from the snow fields.
Past Oxley and heading east you are nearly in Milawa. Milawa is again only a small community but has earned its reputation as a gourmet food destination with several businesses focused on fine gourmet foods and wine.
