Mansfield is located only 100 kilometres to the south of Wangaratta and can trace its history back to the fist indigenous settlers, the Taungurung people. In the 1840’s colonial settlers arrived and the first buildings followed soon after.
There are a variety of attractions in Mansfield including the botanical gardens, cycling, history, animals and wildlife, snow and skiing, wineries and wetlands.
There are also a number of places to eat out, festivals, wedding venues and walking trails, all making Mansfield a good day trip from Wangaratta.
Mansfield was originally named Mount Battery and after the township was surveyed in 1851 it was renamed after Mansfield after in Nottinghamshire, England. It was settlement gold was discovered and the local Post Office opened on January 1, 1858. Mansfield is an important part on the trail of Ned Kelly. There are significant memorials to the Police in the centre of the town and Mansfield Cemetery is the final resting place for the police officers shot by Ned Kelly and his gang at Stringybark Creek.
Mansfieldis also close to both Lake Eildon and Lake Nillahcootie which are popular for waterskiing during the warmer months. Mount Buller and Mount Stirling are also close by and are popular throughout the year. During the cooler winter months they are popular for skiing and during summer bush walking and mountain biking. Horse riding, trail biking and four wheel driving is also popular in the surrounding bush lands which offer extensive tracks.
