Located around 47km’s from Wangaratta the trip to Myrtleford takes less that 40 minutes and is a direct drive along the Great Alpine Road. Mytrleford was once a major tobacco growing but the crop has now been largely eliminated due to cheaper overseas product and the population of around 3500 people is slowly rebuilding itself.
Myrtleford runs alongside the Ovens River, Happy Valley Creek and Barwidgee Creek at the foot of the Mt Buffalo Range. It is surrounded by lush green mountains and during the cooler months the caps of the snowfields can be seen in the distance. At the entrance to Myrtleford you will see the Phoenix Tree which has a centrally sculptured Phoenix Bird by Hans Knorr.
The very popular Murray to Mountains Rail Trail passes through Myrtleford from its beginnings at Wangaratta’s Apex Park. The Rail Trail is open to cyclists and walkers. There is also Lake Buffalo which is a man made lake only 20km’s from central Myrtleford.
Annual events include the annual Myrtleford Festival and the Myrtleford Show.
